I got taught a new technique the other day that I wanted to test out. This is just a quick doodle. Will have something more meaningful up soon.

Manga eye study

I have 2 main issues at the moment with my drawings. First issue is with the eyes, I just don't feel comfortable with drawing them. Second is shading.

I decided to check out several anime shows to see how they drew manga eyes. Kind of feeling more confident with eyes now.

Here are the studies.

I then decided to practise a bit of shading along with drawing eyes on a face.

I think the next thing to do is get a finished drawing done along with studies. This should help uncover any extra weaknesses in my technique.

How to draw manga hair

Greetings all. 

So I have been struggling with drawing hair for quite some time. This tutorial was created to get things straight in my head. I still need to learn to shade properly but I think I am more comfortable with the shape of hair.

After drawing a quick head/ face I drew some basic shapes to guide where the hair will end. This determines the shape and length of the hair.

Where the shapes end I draw the individual strand tips of the hair.

Now it is just a matter of connecting the tips to the scalp.

I then quickly put some basic shading in. Just 2 tones this time.

 

Finally I tidy up the line art and add colour.

My current weaknesses.

Shading still needs work.

I need to focus on getting the eyes looking better.

So I have started to think of hair as tape. Hair clumps tend to be flat and layerd so visualising it as tape kind of makes sence to me. This enables me to plan out hair with a greater degree of accuracy. Shading is also easier.

I am off on holiday for a few days so I will have more meaningful updates when I get back.
